READER, Thomas James (Ret.) Colonel - Passed away peacefully at KGH on the 24th of August 2011 in his 81st year. Loving husband of Frances (Frankie) Gillissie, cherished father of Kelly Laforest (Marc) and Leslie Dupre (Jon) and proud grandpa of Alexandra, Chloe and Sydra. Tom was predeceased by his first wife Margaret, his son, Terry James and his sister Norna Eidsness. He will be sadly missed by many including his numerous nieces and nephews and of course his dog, Roxy. The family will receive friends and family at the JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME (1900 John Counter Boulevard) from 2:00 to 5:00 on Sunday, August 28th. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Church (1111 Taylor Kidd Boulevard) on Monday at 11:00am, reception to follow at St. Paul's. Cremation to follow. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Military C. and E. Passing - Howie Jackson

Howard Edward Jackson (Howie) passed away at Langley Hospice on July 26th, 2011 after having fought a good fight with 2 types of Cancer. Carol his wife of 50 years was with him when he passed peacefully. He leaves Carol and Sons Ross
and Kevin and their families including the daughters of Rod (who passed away in September 2010) to carry on and remember him with love.

Howie joined the Navy in May of 1960 and retired in Masset in 1985. He was in Inuvik, Kingston, Moncton, Gander, Masset and of course Alert.

He went on to fish commercially for 2 years and then he and Carol started a Picture framing business, first in Masset and then in
New Westminster and finally in Cloverdale, BC. Cobblestone Gallery was well known in this area and after closing the store, it was
time to travel. Going across Canada to attend the reunion in Moncton was the highlight of their retirement for soon after Howie
had to have a heart bypass and after recovering and planning a trip to Texas he was diagnosed with advanced Colorectal Cancer.

Howie will truly be missed by his many friends but a Celebration of Life will be held August 7th at 1 p.m. at the Guildford Golf and
Country Club in Surrey. Carol and boys hope you will send messages that we can read at the celebration. It would be such an
honour to our family as we have always felt the 291r s was our FAMILY.

If people are interested we ask that you consider donating your eyes at your death. (Before would not be a good idea!)

Born In: Alder Point, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born On: 15/06/1934

Passed Away In: Brighton, Ontario, Canada
Passed Away On: 18/07/2011

Leaving home at the age of 14 with only enough money to get to Toronto he joined the merchant ships sailing the great lakes.
Saving his money he bought his own truck to haul wood and rock at 16, and began a trucking business. He explained that was one of his prouder moments to own his own business.
Moving on quickly he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and began a career as a seamen rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in a 28 year career with his wife Carmen by his side. Twenty eight moves in twenty eight years.
Retiring from the military still a young man, George quickly was employed again. This time in his second love, the sports industry. Landing a job with the Canadian Games, as the managing director. Traveling from Vancouver to New Brunswick to carry out his role. Living in New Brunswick landed George a job in the trucking industry with Brookville transport, as their director of safety. Something that George seemed to have a great passion for! Safety and trucks.
This new job made George a shoe in for the insurance industry and soon he was working for Boreal insurance as their loss prevention manager for the trucking end of things. Forced to retire at 65 he decided to go on alone and started FCA (Fraser Consulting Agency). He became a leader in the trucking industry for loss prevention and trucking safety.
Working closely with quite a few trucking companies George began to work solely for Sharp Transportation and their owner and close friend, Shawn Baird.
Able to work from home George was able to research and write many books on family history, his love for family and his roots. Also writing a book on Alder Point, N.S. Cape Breton Island his first love, and where he longed to be.
As if he were not busy enough, he started and maintained a blog called Cape Breton news which gave everyone a chance to stay in touch with what was going on back home.
He was a very busy man right up till the very end.
I'm sure wherever he may be now, he is having a cup of boiled tea and lobster tail.
Predeceased by mother, Viola; father, Simon.
Survived by his wife of 56 years, Carmen (Mcneil) Fraser; sisters, Shirley Cahill, Mina MacLennan, Judy Macready, Ginny Laffin, Marilyn Broderick, Eleanor Shaw; brothers, Simon and Derrick; many nieces and nephews.
We love you always George.
Home at last to Cape Breton. Two thumbs up!

TRUDEL, Raymond P. Chief Petty Officer RCN (Ret'd) Stats Can (Ret'd) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Trudel, age 83, in hospital after a valiant struggle with lung cancer. He was loved and will be missed by his spouse Lorraine, his sons Bob, Gerry and Ray (Irma), his daughter-in-law Sue and his brother Gilles (Francoise). Predeceased by his infant daughter Theresa, his sisters Claire and Jeanne-D'Arc as well as his brothers Denis and Laurent. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Michael, Marcus, Krystal, Julie, Chelsea, Matthew and Micayla, his great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves to mourn his numerous friends especially Gus Este and also includes the Barrhaven Lions, the Barrhaven Legion #641, the CNIB, the Old Timers #291 and the Trudel Family Association of which he spent many hours doing volunteer work for their causes. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Barrhaven Legion Hall at 3500 Fallowfield Rd., Ottawa. Pete Gillis passed away peacefully in his own home
with both his boys in attendance on 06 Mar 2011, approx 1900.

There will be a "celebration of life" for Pete at the Royal Canadian
Legion in Masset at 1430 on 13 Mar. His ashes will be scattered
by his family in the future.

Pete's sister from Toronto was able to make it to Masset to be
with the boys.

I would like to do up a binder/book for the boys of any emails
that any of the old timers may wish to pass on. I will gladly accept
any and all emails. I'm sure the boys would appreciate them.

LEBEAU, Irene Ivy (nee Francis) October 31, 1919 in Woolwich, England - February 27, 2011 in Ottawa "Grant her, Jesus, heavenly rest" Irene passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her sons Ray Lebeau (Muriel) and Allan Lebeau (Marion), granddaughters Michelle Chapman (Chris), Danielle Lebeau (Luc Bourdon), Dana Lebeau (Chris Veitch), Kristin Lebeau, Kari Lebeau and Jennifer Lebeau, great grandsons Nicholas, Kody, Noah and Carter, great granddaughters Raiel, Jayme, Isabelle, Danika and Sadie, and many other family members. Irene was predeceased by her husband Rene (Ray) Lebeau and brothers Bert, Jim and John Francis. Irene Immigrated to Canada in April 1946, as a war bride after the Second World War. During her life, she was a kind and generous soul who gave all to family and friends. Rest in peace Mom - you have left this world for a far better place. To all those interested in purchasing a Leitrim coin, here is your answer.

MCpl George McMorrow will have a limited supply of coins for sale at the February 15th GAGGLE. First come – first served. He will also be taking orders if needed.
1. Orders are for this beautiful "CANADIAN FORCES STATION / STATION DES FORCES CANADIENNES, SIGINT OPERATIONS CENTRE / CENTRE DES OPERATIONS SIGINT" Leitrim coin.

2. On the front of this highly detailed coin is the Leitrim Crest with Forest Green, White and Red colours depicting raised Latitude and Longitude lines showing the Arctic circle in the background. Also, in both official languages around the perimeter of this coin in raised lettering reads the words; "CANADIAN FORCES STATION / STATION DES FORCES CANADIENNES", with Leitrim on the crest protected with a clear epoxy finish to the diamond cut edge.

3. In high detail on the reverse depicts the raised Winged Goniometer with raised Latitude and Longitude lines showing the Arctic circle in the background. Also, in both official languages around the perimeter of this coin in raised lettering reads the words; "SIGINT OPERATIONS CENTRE / CENTRE DES OPERATIONS SIGINT", complimented with a diamond cut edge.

4. Each coin will have it's own serial number specific to that coin recorded in an official ledger for Station pers. The serialization is located below the Leitrim Crest on the end or edge of the coin. No two coins will have the same serial number. These coins have an ascending serial number in the order of purchase. As of 17 Jan 2011, the current lowest serial number available for ordering is 0320.

5. Any extra coins ordered by any one individual will not be serialized, one serialized coin per station member.

6. The Original ordering of these magnificent coins, cost and sold for only $6.00 CDN. Due to decreased quantities of these coins in later orders, there was an increase cost of $1.00 per coin to a total of $7.00 per coin plus shipping for out-of-town orders.

CAMPBELL, Raymond Harold (January 20, 1929 - January 9, 2011) Surrounded by his loving family, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, after a year long struggle with Fibrotic Lung Disease. Beloved husband of Viola (Vi). Proud and loving father of Judy Armstrong, Glenn Campbell, Donna Williams (Bruce) and Barbara Stein. Adoring Poppa of Dane, Corey, Dylan, and Carly Rose. MWO Walsh (RJ) - surgery

For those of you who are not aware, MWO Walsh (RJ) just went through a complete knee replacement operation in Colorado. This was planned for some time now but is the result of the medical problems/condition that he went through this time last year with a serious infection in his leg.I spoke with RJ last night and he is doing very well. He has been released from Hospital and is at home recovering. His spirits are very good, and he stated it would be ok to pass on his phone nr and email address. I encourage you all to send RJ an email or even a phone call. We all know RJ loves to talk and hearing from his friends at this time of year while recovering will only help time pass quickly.

Good morning guys.

Just to let you all know that Moon Mullins has passed away.

We got a call around 0530 this morning from his son Ron,
who lives in Windsor, NS.

It happened sometime during the night.

I don't really have any details at this time . I had thought
he was responding well to his treatments but Ron said that
for the past couple of days he had not been eating or drinking
so they took him back to the hospital. Guess it went downhill
from there. Apparently he did not want to be put on any llife
support or be resusitated in anyway.

That's all I have and if/when I get anymore info, I'll pass it on.

A. Thank You – As always, a special thank you to Brandi and Butch Gallant and the CFS Leitrim crew for the excellent service and use of the mess. Profits from this luncheon go to the Shephards of Good Hope.

B. Medical – Tom Montgomery is on the mend and steadily improving after having three heart valves replaced. He remains under observation in the Civic Heart Institute but has been moved from ICU to a ward. Tom and Georgina wish to thank the many friends for their kind thoughts and cards. He asks that friends refrain from visiting for the next few days until he has a chance to get some strength back.

C. Picture of Ralph Kunkel – If anyone has a portrait style picture of Ralph preferable with hat we would appreciate a copy.

5. 2009 Reunion – Just a reminder. The reunion will be held June 26-28 the CFS Leitrim ARM. Please include yes/no for golf when replying. Note the Sunday morning brunch will be held at the Manotick Legion this year vice the Greeley Legion.

6. SRS Desktop Flags – The sale of desktop flags has dropped off considerably. It was decided that each couple at the reunion would receive a flag and the remainder sent to the school in Kingston. A donation will be made to the ALS on behalf of Tom Montgomery.

SMITH, Robert (Bob) Prescott July 14, 1940 - April 9, 2009 We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Bob Smith, age 68 years old, at his home in Edmonton, Alberta, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He will always be loved and remembered by his wife Bonnie (Webb), daughters Nancy (Brett McConkey) of Calgary, Alberta, Marlene (Luis Lanza-Luna) of Vancouver, British Columbia, grandsons, Jaden, Robert, Garrett, Ethan, Connor, Ashton Prescott and walking companion Raven of Calgary, Alberta, his sister Norma (Bill Robinson) of Kitchener, Ontario, brothers Gary of Lennoxville, Quebec and Larry (Lisette Parenteau) of Rock Forest, Quebec, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Wendell and Nora Webb (Lapenna) of Fryeburg, Maine as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Having served in the Navy, Bob was a 45 year member of the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Unit 318, as well as a 46 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A "Time of Remembering" will be held at his home on Saturday May 2, 2009 between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place and Inurnment will be in the family plot in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. With much sadness we announce the sudden passing of Jeremy Smith at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary with his wife and children by his side. Jeremy is predeceased by his mother Catherin and father Douglas. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, daughter Christina (Gary), son Daniel (Louise) and sister Jo (Lorne) and by extended family and friends. Cherished grandfather of Valerie, Derek, Mieke, Will and great grandson Liam. Jeremy spent 32 years in the military and in his retirement was happily involved in the Central Alberta Theatre (CAT) where he spent many hours designing and building sets. He will be deeply missed. A celebration of his life will be held at the Memorial Centre, CAT studios on May 30, from 1 - 4 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Central Alberta Theatre or charity of your choice.

VOWLES, Mary (nee Noonan) Passed away
peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, February 28,
2009 in her 65th year. Born on March 12, 1944 in Gravelburg,
Saskatchewan, Mary was raised in Perth and Balderson, Ontario. Beloved
wife of 36 years to Ken Vowles. She will forever be fondly remembered by
her two children Dennis, and Jennifer Millenor (Kirk Millenor) and her
cherished grandchildren Connor, Jackson and Benjamin. She will be sadly
missed by her brothers Charles Noonan (Karen Cummings) and David Noonan
(Arlene), her nieces and nephews Jesse, Jordan, Michael and Katie (Craig
Bryant), great-niece Alexandra, as well as by many friends. Relatives
and friends will be received at Heritage Funeral Home, 2871 St. Joseph
Blvd., Orleans, on Thursday, March 5, from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. Funeral
Mass will be celebrated at Divine Infant Church, 6658 Bilberry Dr.,
Orleans on Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m., followed by reception in parish

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Roger J. Phillion in
Florida, February 28, 2009. He is joining his parents in heaven Lucien
and Gertrude (Maurice) Phillion. He is survived by his wife Yvette
(Picard) Phillion and step-children Lynn (Jacques), Yves (Rayanne) and
grand-children, Tara, Josh and Evana. Roger is also survived by his
sisters and brothers Edna(Rheal), Marcelle(Marcel), Roselynne,
Maurice(Rita), Claire and late husband (Don) and baby brother Daniel.
Also missed by his in-laws, Maureen and her late husband Fernand,
Gerald(Marcelle), Lise(Richard), Suzanne(Jean-Luc). Roger will be missed
by many nieces and nephews, He will also be missed by his Navy brother
Ren and his wife Suzanne Molnar. Roger will be missed by many nieces and
nephews and by many friends in Canada and also his American family in
Florida. Roger was a Petty Officer in the Navy and retired from the
Federal Government for the last 38 years. He was also an avid volunteer
for CHEO selling ducks for the children and also a Kiwanian. Roger was a
Master Bridge player. A celebration of life will be taking place at a
later date this summer.

daughter Janice (England). Also missed by daughters-in-law Rene and Pat
and loving Grandad to Shauna, Kaitlin, Tyler, Cameron and Rachel. An
accomplished man who had a passion for building (his home at Henley St.
and the cottage at Barry's Bay), technology and his family. Family and
friends will be invited to celebrate Bob's life on May 9th at Manotick

DODGE, Arthur George

On Monday March 23,
2009 at Fairview Manor in Almonte at age 85. Beloved husband of Mary
(nee Cluskey). Loving father of Susan Dodge, Barbara Lock (Tony), and
Peter Dodge (Sue). Proud grandfather of Matthew, Sam, Hilary, Heather
and Stephen. Predeceased by sister Phyllis Keeling (Cam) and parents Dr.
Gordon Dodge and Dora (Kidd) Dodge. Also survived by nieces Judith
Hobart (Garry), and Kathy Dent (Brian). Arthur was born on August 17,
1923 in North Bay. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Hamilton
where Arthur grew up in a loving household, playing sports and attending
to his school work. After graduating from Central Collegiate, he
attended McMaster University where he played the violin in the
University orchestra and studied Chemistry. He then transferred to the
University of Western Ontario and enrolled in the first-ever Radio
Physics program. This education led to a distinguished career in the
field of security and intelligence, beginning with Canadian Arsenals and
culminating in the position of Deputy Chief at the Communications
Security Establishment (CSE) in Ottawa. While Arthur and Mary raised
their young family in Markham Ontario, he played on the Markham Aces
which won the Ontario B Softball Championships in 1952. Mary and Arthur
curled out of the Unionville Club, where Arthur was a member of the team
which won the Governor General's Trophy in 1960. Arthur's true passion
was golf and he was a long-time member of the Mississippi Golf Club in
Carleton Place where he shot his age when he was 76. He was involved in
sport and recreation as a volunteer in Carleton Place, serving as
President of the Carleton Place Curling Club and Chair of the Board of
Parks and Recreation. Arthur also had a deep love for art and developed
his own unique painting style using some of the techniques of his hero,
Pablo Picasso. Of his over 100 paintings, many hang in homes and
organizations as far away as Scotland. Arthur will be greatly missed by
family and friends. The family would like to thank Valerie Ford, who
cared for Arthur over the last three years and who Arthur came to think
of as his good and trusted friend. In addition, the family thanks Jackie
Stach, who also cared for Arthur and was instrumental in his treatment.
A celebration of Arthur's life will take place on Thursday April 2, 2009
commencing at 1:30 p.m. at the Carleton Place Curling Club, 120
Patterson Cres. Carleton Place, Ontario. Funeral arrangements entrusted

Ronald William Ross

We, the family of Ronald William Ross, 69, a resident of North Sydney,
are saddened to announce his death on Sunday April 5, 2009, peacefully
at his home after a brief, courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines, April 27, 1939, Ron was the son of the late Cecil
and Gladys (Hancock) Ross, formerly of Florence.
He joined the navy at the age of 17 and after several years the call of
Cape Breton brought him back to work in telecommunications with the RCMP
Sydney detachment until his retirement in 1992.
An avid golfer, Ron developed a love of the sport early on and upon his
retirement he proceeded to work on his golf skills full-time, often
over-time. A legend at Seaview, know affectionately as 'The Rock', Ron
honed his skills to become Senior Golf Champion several times and
confirmed his legend status with three holes in one at Seaview. He also
developed many solid friendships along the way and we would like to
extend a very special thank you to Joe King, Joey Andrea, Norm Williams,
Brian Cullen and Glen Joseph and the rest of his golf buddies for their
tireless visits and friendship during his illness.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Margaret (Hannam) Ross;
and his four daughters, Catherine (Stewart) Brown, Whitby, Ont., Susan
(Kevin Chapman), Truro, Patricia (Colin) McWhirter, Trenton, Ont.,
Michelle, North Sydney; his grandchildren, David, Melanie (Chris),
Virginia, Kaitlin, Heather, Jennifer and Alison; and one great-grandson,
Rudy. He is also survived by his brothers, Cecil, Paul, Donald, John,
Stephen, Christopher; and his sisters, Sheila, Catherine and Karen.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael and two sisters, Karen and
Virginia.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care team and the VON for
the compassion and care given to Ron throughout his illness and final
days. Also a thank you is extended to staff at Northside General
Hospital for their support and caring to the family. Special thanks to
adored nieces Jennifer (Jesty) Leblanc and Dana (Jesty) MacNeil, Dr.
Wawer and Dr. Miller. The tremendous support and kindness he received
from family and friends was deeply appreciated.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral ass
for Ron will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church, North
Sydney, with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107
Pleasant St., North Sydney.

1. Petty Officer Second Class Dean Boyer will be retiring from the
Canadian Forces on 05 May 09, after 20 plus years of loyal and dedicated
service.

2. PO2 Boyer joined the CF in 26 April 1989 in Montreal, Quebec and
completed recruit training at CFRS Cornwallis and Communications
Researcher training at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and
Electronics in Kingston, Ontario. During his distinguished career Dean
has served at the following locations: CFS Gander, CFS Leitrim, and 2
Electronic Warfare Squadron. Interspersed amongst these postings Dean
has served on domestic and international operations. These include: OP
SHARPGUARD on HMCS Iroquois, several tours at CFS Alert, and his most
recent tour was TFA Kandahar, Afghanistan.

3. Dean will join his wife Trisha and 2 daughters, Morgan and
Racheal, in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, where Dean has secured employment
as the Project Director Computer Forensics Office at the Department of
Justice.

4. A retirement function will be held in Dean's honour at the WOs &
Sgts Mess, CFB Kingston on 24 Apr 09, commencing at 1230 hrs. A meal
will be served at 1300 hrs at a cost of approximately $20.00. Those

Flynn, George Joseph Thomas November 22, 2008 The death occurred at the Summerset Manor, Summerside on Saturday, November 22th , 2008 of " George " Joseph Thomas Flynn of the Summerset Manor and formerly of Charlottetown , aged 69 years. George was born on December 11th , 1938 to his late parents, Edmund & Eileen( nee Bell ) Flynn. Survived by his brothers & sisters Ann Huculak of Edmonton, Ab., Leroy ( Margaret ) Flynn of Surrey, B.C., Jacqueline O'Brien ( Allan Rogers ) of Charlottetown, and Eugene ( Kathleen ) Bradley of Edmonton, Ab.. Sgt Kelly joined the CF on 13 Oct 1988 and completed recruit training at CFRS Cornwallis and trades training as an artilleryman at CFB Shilo. Sgt Kelly joined the Comm Rsch trade in 1993 and completed trade training at E Squadron, CFSCE Kingston. During his distinguished career, Krash has served at the following locations: CFB Calgary, CFB Shilo, CFB Petawawa, CFB Kingston, CFS Gander, CFS Leitrim and CFIOGHQ Detachment Texas in San Antonio. Interspersed amongst these postings, Krash served on the following tours of duty: CFS Alert, Op Eclipse in Ethiopia/Eritrea, Op Apollo (CENTCOM), Theater Activation Team in Afghanistan and Op Athena also in Afghanistan.

David Paul Drobot - CPO2 Retired - Communicator Research

With sadness the family of David John Drobot of Victoria, BC announce his sudden passing while pursuing his passion, cycling, on Saturday, July 19, 2008, while on vacation in Calgary, at the age of 59 years. Born and raised in Calgary, Dave joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968 and served in communications in many isolation postings in Canada and abroad. Dave retired from the forces as a master warrant officer in 1997, at which time he joined the Great Canadian Casinos in Victoria where he worked until his passing. Dave is survived and sadly missed by his brothers, Don (Norma) and family of Okotoks, AB, Dale (Lynne) of Calgary, Bob of Edmonton, AB; and his nephew Allen (Esther) Drobot and family of Barrie, ON. Also surviving him are his step-father Frank Wilson of Calgary; aunt Pat Smith of Kimberly, BC; as well as numerous cousins. He will be especially missed by his niece Shannon Drobot and nephew Bradley Drobot who held a special place in his heart. Dave was predeceased by his father Andrew Drobot in 1966; brother Ron in 1980; and mother Kay Wilson in 2004. Dave’s generosity and compassion towards others will be remembered and missed by all. Anthony (Tony) Whittall

WHITTALL Anthony (Tony) Capt. (Rt'd) With deep sadness we announce the death on April 3, 2008, of my husband and friend. Tony was born on February 24, 1936, in Shrewsbury, England. Following his formal education, he was conscripted into the RAF, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. His visit to Canada as a teenager beckoned him back to this great country, where he served with the Canadian Forces for thirty years as a communications technician and Electronic Specialist Officer. Having lived from coast to coast to coast, Sidney was his obvious retirement haven. This great community allowed him opportunities to again serve, as a Town Councilor, Chair of the Peninsula Water Commission, and the first chair of the waste water committee. Tony also served and participated in the many community committees supporting the Town's Vision Project. As the chair of the Sidney Ratepayers Association, he was often called upon to provide advice and ideas on the Town's political activities. An avid hiker, he was familiar with all the hiking trails on the Peninsula. He served for many years as the chair of the Friends of John Dean Provincial Park Society. He climbed mountains in the Yukon and Vancouver Island, he sport and commercially fished salmon in Newfoundland and Vancouver Island. In this life, Tony was able to accomplish most of his boyhood dreams. Holding a U.K. private pilots license for powered and sailplane flying, his first solo flight was at the age of fourteen years. Having done his duty to family and country, he considered his departure from this world as the ultimate flight to await loved ones, meet old friends and to continue his walks with his deceased poodle, Sasha. He leaves to mourn for a while, his wife, Patricia; son, Anthony; and daughters, Elizabeth, Heather (Luke), and Sarah (David); his sister, Ann (Havard); his hiking friend, Jim Sandwith; his grandchildren; and great-grandchild. No service by request. A memorial service if you want with the drinks on Tony.

CFS Alert - 50th Anniversary

On September 1st 1958, CFS Alert began its operational role as a signals intelligence unit of the Canadian Forces. In the close to 50 years that have followed, the site has seen many changes and many faces as the "Frozen Chosen" have stood guard on the top of the world.

In order to ensure that the golden anniversary of Alert receives the acknowledgement it deserves, a committee has been put together to orchestrate the celebrations. Plans are in their infancy at the moment, but will include some sort of official ceremony on the ground in Alert. Restrictions on accommodations and aircraft availability will play a large role in keeping that entourage to a minimum, but it's hoped that those who do go up will represent personnel from the site's infancy right up to its current occupants. Stay tuned for further details as they develop.

As well as the events on the ground in Alert, a huge celebration will be held in the CFS Leitrim All Ranks mess here in the south end of Ottawa. Leitrim is the only other remaining station from the Supplementary Radio System days, and has been the "home station" of what was the primary occupant of Alert for a great many years, the Communicator Research 291 trade. The celebration will certainly not be restricted to any one occupation though - a warm welcome will be extended to anyone who ever had the pleasure to serve at CFS Alert. Whether you were there as a cook, a tech in Ops, a met tech, an EGS tech, a PERI, CE crew, Smokey, Bandit, Maxi, Mini, a clerk, Postie, Fuzz O, Madame Adm, or even the CO - all will be welcome.

In addition to the people who did tours at Alert, also warmly invited will be the people who were, and are, the lifeline to Alert - the aircrew. All members of any aircrew who supplied Alert throughout the years are more than welcome. Along with them, folks who served in Alert as part of the construction and engineering teams who built and maintained the station are also included as most welcome participants.

There will be events in Alert, and a weekend of activities at CFS Leitrim that will include some sort of a meet and greet, as well as official ceremonies by dignitaries to be named later.

Again, stay tuned for further developments as they happen.

One thing that has been determined is that we would like to create a book of photos that will show the evolution of Alert from its humble beginnings to what it is today. It's hoped that the book would be available at the event to give to participants, or possibly to sell at a minimal price. In order to create the book, we'll be asking for photographs from those who were there. While people will certainly be in the photos, we want to place the emphasis on the buildings, the quarters, the messes, and the sites in and around Alert. Anyone who has photos they would be willing to share can scan and email them to the address below.

Master Warrant Officer Ed Mendonca will be retiring from the Canadian Forces on 1 Aug 08, after 24 plus years of loyal and dedicated service. Originally recruited under the YTEP program as a Photo Tech 541, MWO Mendonca transferred to the regular forces as a Communicator Research Operator in 1984.

2. MWO Mendonca completed recruit training at CFRS Cornwallis and trades training at E Squadron, CFSCE Kingston. During his distinguished career Ed has served at the following locations: CFS Masset, CFS Leitrim (X3), CFB Gander, CFSCE Kingston, and the Medina RSOC in San Antonio, Texas. Interspersed within these tours Ed has completed three tours of CFS Alert, a tour at sea on the Australian ship HMAS Hobart and one tour as a the LO for Op Apollo ROTO 1 at the GRSOC in Augusta Georgia, USA.

3. Ed and his wife Ruth, and son Christopher are planning on moving to Windsor Ontario upon his retirement where Ed is planning on taking up a second career.

During the span of his career Harold completed 3 tours of CFS Alert, deployed on 4 operational tours, CCIBH NCE Velika Kladusa in Bosnia and Herzegovina, TFA NCE Plan staff Centcom Macdill AFB, TF Kabul Afghanistan ISAF HQ and last RC South MNBHQ TFA Kandahar.

Harold will commence his retirement years here in Kingston with his wife Debra and his son Nathan. Harold is currently looking at securing a primary reserve position within Kingston.

Karl enrolled with the CF in Jun 1987 and graduated from RMC Kingston with an electronics engineering degree in 1991. He has served at the following locations at one time or another: CFB Edmonton, 715E (Montreal) Communciations Squadron, CFB North Bay, and several locations in the National Capital Region. Karl also completed a tour of duty at CC MFO in El Gorah, Egypt.
Karl, Suzanne, Catherine and Sophie will remain in Gatineau as he continues a military career with the reserves.

1. THANKS: Rick Gallant and his volunteer staff were thanked for preparing the lunch. Monies raised at this luncheon will help cover expenses for the annual CANUS Ball

2. FINANCIAL REPORT: No change from our last gaggle, our association presently has approximately $1,940.00 in the bank. A $325.00 cheque for the ALS was presented to their representative Nigel Van Loan. This was the proceeds from our last luncheon.

3. RINGS; CFS Leitrim ARM are placing an order for SRS rings. Cost is male $332.00 and female $260.00. Rings can be ordered through Rick Gallant at the CFS Leitrim ARM.

4. ALERT 50th ANNIVERSARY: Tom Jenkins gave a brief outline of events planned for this occasion.
They are planning a function to be held at CFS Leitrim which will be open to everyone who served in Alert. They are looking for photos to be displayed. Wayne Moore, Jim Humes and Lynn Wortman volunteered to represent the Old-timer’s Association on the planning committee.

5. BASE PICTURES: CFS Leitrim ARM has pictures of several of the old bases on display (Alert, Leitrim, Gloucester and Coverdale). Anyone wishing scanned copies of these pictures can contact B. Whitlaw.

6. CAIRN: It was decided that each year the Cairn Dedication ceremony should honour one individual. This was approved. It was decided that this year’s honouree would be Malcolm "Mac" Feeley.

7. REUNION : A brief discussion of all the requirements for the reunion proved that everything is booked and ready. Notice to be sent ASAP.

Sgt Greg (Squid) Butler ,has been a loyal 291er for 25+ years, his postings include Gander (X2), CFLS Ottawa, CFS Leitrim (x2), Skaggs Island, California, MARLANT HQ (HMCS's Athabaskan, St John's and Montreal) Kosovo, Afghanistan and 3X Alert, Currently at 764 Comm Sqn, Tunney's Pasture, Ottawa. Greg is heading to Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia to be with the love of his life Tara, and is continuing his service as a reservist with 3 Int Coy, Halifax. There will be a retirement ceremony with his workmates, and daughters Samantha, and Elizabeth and Girlfriend Tara, at 10hrs on the 15 Dec 06, then it's off to the Elephant and Castle in the Rideau Centre for a retirement luncheon... It is with great sadness to pass on that age 49, Jim Barnes passed away on 12 Nov 06 at the Madigan U.S. Army hospital in Washingtson State. Jim had courageously battled cancer during the past year, and eventually his heart stopped after numerous operations.

He is survived by his loving wife Kay (Retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief), and other family members. His burial is scheduled for Friday 17 Nov 06 at 2 PM (Pacific Standard Time) at Burley Funeral Chapel, 30 South Ely St, Oak Harbour, Washington 98277 (1-360-675-3192). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the SIFE in Hawaii.

Just wanted to pass on that Keith Clow passed away in Masset Hospital
tonight at approx 830pm. I spoke with his wife Leona a few minutes ago.
Keith had been battling diabetes for some time. "He went peacefully and is
not in pain anymore."

Fm: Robbi Robinson I just spoke to Leona and she said that cards or letters of condolence would be appreciated and can be sent to Leona Clow, PO Box 42, Masset, BC, V0T 1M0. She was very happy that Keith's friends and colleagues were thinking about him. She said that he went peacefully in his sleep and she was happy that his suffering was over. As you know, he had been fighting diabetes for quite some time and had been undergoing dialysis to help him in that battle. Leona is finding it very hard but is getting by, day by day. She was surrounded by her daughters (Linda from Seattle, Louise from Ottawa, and Colleen) and her son, Murray and his family during this trying time. - 04 Oct 06
